The “Digital Media in Health Communication and Literacy” course is a fully online programme intended on bringing together participants with very different perspectives, and abilities, to collaboratively create digital media projects capable of communicating complex concepts in scientific research.

Developed to be an intensive fully online 11-week course, students are invited to engage in a cooperative setting where they are guided through the process of exploring many different methodologies, with a focus on creating health communication material for both linear and experiential formats.
This online course is certified with 3 ECTS by U.Porto. Therefore, by completing this programme, students will receive a EUGLOH certificate that awards them with that number of credits. This type of interdisciplinary hackathon practice is planned to allow external professionals and invited guests to participate in a normally closed academic setting. Target Group: EUGLOH students in the 2nd and 3rd study cycles (including 4th or 5th years of
an Integrated Master) of all fields of knowledge
Dates: from the 27th of November 2020 to the 19th of February 2021
Activity Structure: the activity will be held fully online; the synchronous sessions will take place on
Fridays afternoons, from 15:00 to 18:00 CET/14:00 to 17:00 WET. Students will mostly work asynchronously throughout the course, In the weeks of Christmas and New Year, there will be no synchronous sessions.

António Fernando Coelho
is Associate Professor at the Informatics Engineering Department at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, with more than 20 years of experience in teaching and research in the areas of Computer Graphics, Digital Games and Gamification and Geospatial Systems.
He is the Director of the Doctoral Programme in Digital Media,
a transdisciplinary PhD programme focused in the Digital Transformation scientific challenges. And he is also the coordinator of
the Computer Graphics and Virtual Environments area of the research institute INESC TEC.
Tiago Gama Rocha is a hackathon specialist, creative strategist, and collaboration
evangelist. He strives to inspire future generations as a lecturer at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto and Instituto
Superior da Maia. His Ph.D. in Digital Media by the UTAustin|Portugal Program strengthened his role as an interdisciplinary researcher
, having since co-founded several innovative collaborative projects, such as EMERGENCE Hackathon, Openfield Creative Lab

Hernâni Zão Oliveira has a double degree in Biology and Journalism from the University of Porto. He has two master’s degrees completed at the same university: one in Molecular Oncology, and the other one in Health Education. Oliveira coordinated the Creative Laboratory for Health Literacy at the University of Porto, as part of his Ph.D in Digital Media by the UTAustin | Portugal Program. Since 2019, he is the founder of the startup BRIGHT , a project aimed at the development of innovative products in the area of citizen empowerment.
Abel Neto is a Game Designer and Researcher specializing in asymmetric games. His diversity of interests makes him a jack of all trades with a diverse skill set that he utilizes to craft player and user experiences. His cognitive flexibility and creativity allows him to anticipate potential problems and devise solutions for them. He is currently a PhD student at the Doctoral Program in Digital Media at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.
The interuniversity Alliance EUGLOH – European University for Global Health, a pilot initiative funded by the European
Commission within the Erasmus+ Program, is formed by 5 European Universities: University of Porto (Portugal), University
of Lund (Sweden), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Germany), University of Szeged (Hungary) and Université Paris-Saclay (France).
This Alliance aims to stimulate cooperation in a variety of areas linked to Global Health (digital health, public
health and well-being, environmental protection and food safety).

1. Does the programmme have registration costs or other fees?
The programme has no associated costs.
2. Will the course have an exclusively online format?
Given the current constraints, the course was designed to be 100% online.
3. Who can attend the course?
Students from the 2nd and 3rd study cycles of the EUGLOH Alliance can attend. EUGLOH is formed by University of Porto, University of Lund, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, University of Szeged and Université Paris-Saclay.
4. What are the criteria for selecting candidates?
The balance between the admissible scientific areas will be considered, as well as the gender balance, and priority will be given to students with special educational needs.
Additionally, candidates will be ranked using the following criteria (scores from 0 to 20):
a) Curriculum and CV/portfolio analysis;
b) Motivation to participate in the activity;
c) English level (assessed by the motivation component of the application).
As a tiebreaker: Interview by videoconference to assess the motivation, language level, and the skills that the candidate reveals.
5. How long does it take to complete the course?
The course lasts 11 weeks, equivalent to 81 hours. Of these, 32 hours will be of synchronous work.
6. Is there a limit on absences from the program?
Students must justify each absence. Students must participate in, at least, 75% of the
synchronous sessions in order to be eligible for the 3 ECTS credits.
7. Do I need a team to join the course?
Applicants apply individually. Once selected, the organization will create multidisciplinary work teams for the 11 weeks of the course.
8. What communication tools are going to be used during the programme?
During this course, participants will mainly be using Discord and Microsoft Teams. Discord will be the platform you use to communicate, receive important announcements, ask for help, and share files with your teammates, allowing you to work asynchronously.
Microsoft Teams will be used for every synchronous session. All invites will be shared on Discord.
9. Who owns my project & IP?
The team that develops the project is the owner of the project and IP. We encourage the use of open source tools whenever possible,
